Also known as: AAT; α-1 proteinase inhibitor
Measurement of alpha-1 anti-trypsin (α1-AT) levels is useful in the investigation of emphysema and unexplained liver disease in adults. In paediatric practice, alpha-1 anti-trypsin deficiency is associated with neonatal jaundice. Patients with low α1-AT levels will be phenotyped to determine homo- or heterozygosity of deficiency alleles. Alpha-1anti-trypsin levels can rise as part of the acute phase response.
