Also known as: Mast Cell Tryptase; Serum Tryptase
Serum Tryptase is a marker of mast cell degranulation. Tryptase measurement is of value in the assessment of selected cases of anaphylactic/anaphylactoid reactions and in the investigation of suspected mastocytosis. An elevated tryptase does not distinguish between anaphylaxis and anaphylactoid reactions. Also see investigation of anaesthetic reactions.
In the investigation of anaphylaxis 3 blood samples should be taken recorded with the time and date of collection:
- At the time of the reaction (within 1 hour or as soon as possible)
- No later than 4 hours post onset of symptoms
- A future random sample to determine baseline level
