Urine electrophoresis is primarily used for the detection of free monoclonal light chain paraproteins (Bence-Jones Proteins) in patients with suspected myeloma. Polyclonal free light chains may occur in the urine of healthy elderly people as well as in inflammatory disorders and patients with renal dysfunction. All serum and urine samples with suspected paraprotein bands will be investigated by immunofixation electrophoresis.
